Summary

Dark and powerful forces threaten the world of Garn once more in this second novel in legendary New York Times bestselling author Raymond E。 Feist’s epic fantasy series, the Firemane Saga。

Hatushaly and his young wife Hava have arrived in the prosperous trading town of Beran’s Hill to restore and reopen the fire-damaged Inn of the Three Stars。 They are also preparing for the popular midsummer festival, where their friends Declan and Gwen will be wed。

But Hatu and Hava are not the ordinary loving couple they appear to be。 They are assassins from the mysterious island of Coaltachin, home to the powerful and lethal Nocusara, the fearsome “Hidden Warriors。” Posing as innkeepers, they are awaiting instructions from their masters in the Kingdom of Night。

Hatu conceals an even more dangerous secret。 He is the last remaining member of the legendary Firemanes, the ruling family of Ithrace。 Known as the Kingdom of Flames, Ithrace was one of the five greatest realms of Tembria, ruled by Hatu’s father, Stervern Langene, until he and his people were betrayed。 His heir, Hatu—then a baby—was hidden among the Nocusara, who raised him to become a deadly spy。

Hatu works hard to hide his true identity from all who would seek to use or to destroy him, as fate has other plans for the noble warrior。 Unexpected calamity forces him to make choices he could not have dreamed awaited him。

A series of horrific events shatters the peace of Beran’s Hill, bringing death and devastation and unleashing monstrous forces。 Once more, the Greater Realms of Tembria are threatened—and nothing will ever be the same again。

Really enjoying this so far!

Feist is definitely enjoying a return to form with the Firemane Saga; leaving Midkemia behind seems to have definitely energized him and there's a spark to this work that's been missing from his other recent work, IMHO。You've got an interesting network of characters linking up and moving around here that are easy to root for。 Hatu and Hava are both excellent and are able to carry the narrative well, but some of the other characters are on interesting paths of their own, like Declan the Smith。 Pr Feist is definitely enjoying a return to form with the Firemane Saga; leaving Midkemia behind seems to have definitely energized him and there's a spark to this work that's been missing from his other recent work, IMHO。You've got an interesting network of characters linking up and moving around here that are easy to root for。 Hatu and Hava are both excellent and are able to carry the narrative well, but some of the other characters are on interesting paths of their own, like Declan the Smith。 Probably the only real flaw here is dropping in the Flame Guard so significantly here as an ally without having done much (anything?) to really establish them in the first book。 They're an interesting enough group, but they're playing a major enough role that building them out a little more earlier would have been beneficial, I think。 Similar issue with dropping in the main antagonist (who is still a little unclear) without dropping more threads in the first book。 It's a lot to do in a single volume of the series for one thing, but the bigger issue is just establishing all of these earlier would have improved the overall flow。 Perhaps Feist didn't outline the series all that thoroughly?A relatively minor problem。 I'm in on this book and this series。 I want to know how Hatu & Hava are going to make their lives work in the face of a destiny that others are forcing upon them。 I'm curious to know more about what's going on with magic in this world。 I want to know more about this vicious and domination church structure is really all about。 I'm all in on figuring out who the real powers are driving this whole thing, and why/how the Firemanes are so important。It's fun, it's interesting and there's scads of worldcrafting going on here without being pedantic about the whole thing。 It all serves the plot, which is something that's appreciated。Looking forward to the next one。 。。。more

Much better than the first。 A few repetitions still but I don't feel like I've wasted my time in reading this one。 Much better than the first。 A few repetitions still but I don't feel like I've wasted my time in reading this one。 。。。more

This is a ripping yarn, and is entertainingly read。 There are a lot of deaths, and some good, and not so good surprises。 I look forward to the next book in this series。

I was excited when the 2nd book of this series just came out。 We know more of the characters as they learn more about themselves。 Start with the first book, King of Ashes。Some cities were destroyed, possibly to stop the last survivor of the empire who has firemane magical powers。

Adequate, but Feist has written betterEasy to read, the story goes fast but before you know it the book has finished and story is far from over。 The main characters aren't as memorable or fresh as the Magician series。 Still, it's a reliably "ok" read。 If you've read all Feist's book (like me) then this is nice to read more, but it's starting to get tedious in the storytelling。 If you've not read Feist then start with Magician, a much better series。 Adequate, but Feist has written betterEasy to read, the story goes fast but before you know it the book has finished and story is far from over。 The main characters aren't as memorable or fresh as the Magician series。 Still, it's a reliably "ok" read。 If you've read all Feist's book (like me) then this is nice to read more, but it's starting to get tedious in the storytelling。 If you've not read Feist then start with Magician, a much better series。 。。。more

My major criticism of the first book in this series was that it to be seemed more of a set up for later books than a complete story in and of itself。 I had hoped that the second book would really take off。 Unfortunately, this book suffers from the same flaw。 Nevertheless, this one does have more substance and I am glad to see the author back to his old form。 I just hope that he lives long enough to finish at least the first arc of this story。 Overall, recommended for fans of epic fantasy under 6 My major criticism of the first book in this series was that it to be seemed more of a set up for later books than a complete story in and of itself。 I had hoped that the second book would really take off。 Unfortunately, this book suffers from the same flaw。 Nevertheless, this one does have more substance and I am glad to see the author back to his old form。 I just hope that he lives long enough to finish at least the first arc of this story。 Overall, recommended for fans of epic fantasy under 600 pages ! 。。。more

Many good aspects, but did’ent like the level and detail of violence, especially rape of women。 I had to fast forward when it became to much。 In book 1: no magic。 Book 2: a small incident in the end of the book。 I hope book 3 has more magic, and less violence against civilians。

Enjoyed the second book in this series。 I am beginning to get to know the characters。 Interesting that most of the characters are working class and not aristocratic, apart from one exception。

i like Feist he is a great storyteller and this book is another good read 。

The second in Feist's Firemane Saga is classic fantasy, primarily following two lovers (Hava and Hatu) that had been (in the previous book) brought up in a secret society, found some kind of unexpected peace, and got caught up in the nexus of incredible, inexplicable violence。Hatu is the last Firemane, and so has secret powers and an even more secret and powerful heritage。 Other uncanny abilities exist, and the storytelling is at its weakest when things feel too convenient。However, Feist has alw The second in Feist's Firemane Saga is classic fantasy, primarily following two lovers (Hava and Hatu) that had been (in the previous book) brought up in a secret society, found some kind of unexpected peace, and got caught up in the nexus of incredible, inexplicable violence。Hatu is the last Firemane, and so has secret powers and an even more secret and powerful heritage。 Other uncanny abilities exist, and the storytelling is at its weakest when things feel too convenient。However, Feist has always been able to invoke a powerful feeling of home, and in Queen of Storms he does a phenomenal job of establishing and then tearing that feeling away。 。。。more

I’m enjoying this new series from Feist but it certainly isn’t rift war and it shouldn’t be。 The island nations, sailing and of course some fire magic are very welcome。 I’m looking forward to the next book and meaning more about the real threat to Garn。

Once again, a fantastic book to listen to on audible。 David thorpe is an amazing narrator and does such a wonderful job giving life to the characters and depth to the world。

I enjoyed this installment quite a lot more than the previous one, since we didn't spend a third of the book mired in forgettable world-building。 The plot actually moved along quite quickly, and though nothing of the grander plot was resolved, or even fully revealed (frustratingly vague enemies from somewhere else), it at least felt like things were happening。 Hava had the most interesting adventure of the book, which is why it's a bit of a shame that her character didn't get any more developmen I enjoyed this installment quite a lot more than the previous one, since we didn't spend a third of the book mired in forgettable world-building。 The plot actually moved along quite quickly, and though nothing of the grander plot was resolved, or even fully revealed (frustratingly vague enemies from somewhere else), it at least felt like things were happening。 Hava had the most interesting adventure of the book, which is why it's a bit of a shame that her character didn't get any more development other than being motivated by "find Hatu。" Another character even says outright that the purpose of her existence is to support Hatu。 Ick。I had to suspend my disbelief at a lot of aspects - ie, Declan's somehow being a master swordsman, Hava easily tracking down one person in an entire world made up of a bazillion islands - but at least it was certainly more entertaining than the first book。 。。。more

I'm not sure what happened between the excellent book 1 and the continuation。 On a scale of 1 to 10, the plausibility of most major plot elements is 1, and I like Matthew Reilly。 I might still read book 3 because Reimond Feist is one of my favorite authors。 I'm not sure what happened between the excellent book 1 and the continuation。 On a scale of 1 to 10, the plausibility of most major plot elements is 1, and I like Matthew Reilly。 I might still read book 3 because Reimond Feist is one of my favorite authors。 。。。more

This book is a page-turner, and the characters you care about develop in all the right ways。 It shares some of the problems of the first novel, however - once again the magical realm is made up of a pastiche of very familiar historical tropes, and the pacing of the novel makes a whole world feel quite small。 A few new problems creep in here as well。 Feist is writing in a darker fashion that perhaps I’m used to, and it doesn’t feel all that natural - and some of the adult material feels a little This book is a page-turner, and the characters you care about develop in all the right ways。 It shares some of the problems of the first novel, however - once again the magical realm is made up of a pastiche of very familiar historical tropes, and the pacing of the novel makes a whole world feel quite small。 A few new problems creep in here as well。 Feist is writing in a darker fashion that perhaps I’m used to, and it doesn’t feel all that natural - and some of the adult material feels a little forced。It is pleasing to see the character of Hava get a decent run in this book - she has moved on from the token love interest motivation and source of sexy context, and pirate queen suits her well。 The biggest issue for mine is that we are starting to see a few internal inconsistencies creeping in - magic is not discussed, but seem to be quite prevalent; huge forces are at play that we have no earlier hint of, despite being told that characters are worldly and wise。 Page turning; and I will look forward to the conclusion - not quite up to the standard I was hoping for though。 。。。more

I love Feist, his characters, and his stories。 The one complaint I have is the books are more installments in a long narrative, rather than novels that could stand on their own。 Not sure if I'm quibbling, though。 I love Feist, his characters, and his stories。 The one complaint I have is the books are more installments in a long narrative, rather than novels that could stand on their own。 Not sure if I'm quibbling, though。 。。。more

I have alway loved this authors work! He has a talent for character development that really sucks you into the story。 His protagonists are never perfect or pure but very much human and multi-layered which make them so much more interesting! Cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Great sequelWe are introduced to the azhante and the ground is well laid for a third installment。 Very satisfying read all around

Connor

Realistic, well paced and fun。 It involves the reader into kingdom and their characters; not skipping or overlooking things we usually see taken for granted in similar novels- how people process grief, well planned betrayals, war and spoils, etc。 there’s no hero who saves everyone by himself, or someone who takes on a whole organization for revenge。 people rather than “characters” in a book。

Richard Cullen

Great readI loved this book as I have loved all his others he writes a great story with excellent world building and characters you want to follow

Enjoyed this more than the preceding book in the series。 The tension is ratcheting up, the scale is growing and some downright nasty stuff is happening。 The characters are still a bit lacking in depth so it'll be interesting to see how the inevitable third installment deals with this。 Enjoyed this more than the preceding book in the series。 The tension is ratcheting up, the scale is growing and some downright nasty stuff is happening。 The characters are still a bit lacking in depth so it'll be interesting to see how the inevitable third installment deals with this。 。。。more
